Hey hey👋
Gyuri’s here, the IT guy of ESN ELTE. I hope you are ready to start your journey in Budapest, it will be a fun one.
Also, this is the first issue of our Weekly Newsletter so any feedback will be more than appreciated.
Getting around Budapest🚲
Although the city has great public transportation, sometimes the routes are not aligned with your destination. Or there is traffic. Or left your BKK ticket/pass at home. Or you just want to cycle through downtown. For that, we have MOL Bubi.
Anyone without a home address in Hungary can only use their Pay As You Go option, BUT it only costs 20HUF / minute, which is around 0.05EUR. So basically 1EUR = 20 minutes of ride. Which, to be honest, is as low as it can be.
For more info, visit molbubi/en

Gyuri’s drinking tip🍹
Let me tell you about Grund. Every day, between 5 pm and 7 pm, it is happy hour(s). This means that all of their Cocktails (20+) and some other hard liquor cost half the price. Trust me, getting two Long Island Ice Tea for 2760HUF (~6.90EUR) is like getting your two favorite toys from Santa after your mom said you have to choose one while writing your letter to him.
Just be aware that after your second drink, another two just 5 minutes before 7 pm might feel like your greatest idea… but it probably isn’t🙃

Belli Di Mama🍕 + Persian Pastries
I myself really like eating out. Probably more than going out. So I will try to bring you a lot of gems from the city. And I know it's cliche to start with a pizzeria, but it is something to show off. And I promise I will show you the best Hungarian restaurants later on. But Belli di Mama was ranked the 33rd best pizzeria in Europe by this Italian site.
I have eaten one of the best pizzas at this place. It feels authentic. They also work with quality ingredients and have a good selection of wines🍷

The other spot I’d like to talk about a little bit is basically called Persian Pastry (Iran cukrászda). They have two locations, and no website or Facebook page.
One is here, the other is not so far here.
I probably couldn’t even count how many different pastries they have. But at least 8 different types of baklavas. I live about 3 minutes walking distance from here so it isn’t unusual that I get myself into some trouble🥲
I truly can recommend it. And, if you greet the owner with ‘Salaam’ he will gift you a cookie.
Were you really in Budapest without…
…visiting Szimpla Kert ?
I wanted to include something, which if I had written about a few weeks later, you most likely would have had already been there. It is the most reviewed pub in the country as far as I know. I have yet to meet an ESNer that haven’t gotten lost in this magical place. A truly unique location in the party district.
As they describe themself, a huge pub with old mismatched items & a disused Trabant car, with music, food, market & a garden. It is very random and that makes it so wonderful.

If you liked my first letter and feel that you’ll leave with more than you’ve arrived with, the best way to help me out is to share it with your friends! And also, buy a ticket for the FLAG PARTY!!🇪🇺
Thank you for reading!
See you next week!👋
